W. Marston Becker (‘74 BS, ‘77 JD)
W. Marston Becker graduated from West Virginia University in 1974 with a bachelor’s degree in business administration and earned his law degree from WVU in 1977. At WVU, Becker served as Student Administration treasurer and was the principal student leader involved in forming the WVU Student Foundation, a student organization responsible for campus activities including Mountaineer Week. He was also a member of Delta Tau Delta fraternity.
Becker currently serves as chairman and chief executive officer of Orion Capital Corporation, a New York Stock Exchange listed company that offers specialized property and casualty insurance through its 13 operating companies.
Upon graduating from law school, Becker began his career as an accountant with Ernst & Young in Pittsburgh. The following year, he joined McDonough-Caperton Insurance Group in Charleston as vice president of operations. He was named executive vice president in 1982 and president and chief executive officer in 1987. Under his leadership, the company experienced a $23 million growth in revenues, expanded its operation into nine states and became the third largest privately-held insurance brokerage firm in the U.S.
In 1991, McDonough-Caperton became a subsidiary of American Business Insurance Inc., which was subsequently purchased by Acordia, Inc. of Indianapolis in 1993. Becker became Acordia’s executive vice president. The following year, he was named president and chief operating officer of DPIC Companies and senior vice president of Orion Capital. As an Orion Capital company, DPIC is the second largest writer of professional liability insurance for architects and consulting engineers in North America.
Becker was named vice chairman and director of Orion Capital in 1996 then became chairman and chief executive officer in 1997. The Fortune 500 company, with over 3,000 employees, writes approximately $1.3 billion in premiums annually.
A certified public accountant, Becker has continued his education over the years by attending the American Management Association’s Management Course for Presidents, Wharton School’s Management for the Service Sector and Harvard’s IBM Executive Continuing Education.
In addition to being a successful business executive, Becker has continued to serve West Virginia University as a member of the WVU Foundation Board of Directors. He was involved in “The Campaign for West Virginia University” as chairman of the Campaign Planning Committee and as a member of the Campaign Executive Committee. He was elected to the Board in 1982 and served as chairman from 1987 to 1989.
Becker has been involved in many civic organizations serving directorships on the West Virginia Business and Industrial Development Council, West Virginia Business Roundtable, Charleston Regional Chamber of Commerce, Goodwill Industries, Insurance Industry Charitable Fund (San Francisco) and United Capital Insurance Company (Atlanta). He is a current director of United National Bank of West Virginia, Strategic Solutions, Inc. of Atlanta and Guaranty National Corporation of Englewood, Colo.
