The Monticola

WVU’s student yearbook was founded in 1896. Long after the other reminders of college days have faded, the Monticola reminds former WVU students of their youthful lifestyles and concerns. Covers of the Monticola sometimes tell us as much as the pages inside. The 1901 edition with its laurel-embossed leather binding, the art deco geometric designs on 1930s editions, a hillbillyish Mountaineer caricature in 1948 and the madras-bound 1964 edition are all symbols of the attitudes and trends of their eras.
