Community Service

Alumni Leader Best Practices

Download as PDF

WVU Alumni chapters help bring Mountaineers together as a local community for fellowship and fun. Giving back to your local community or to help a cause that the WVU AA supports can attract and retain members for your chapter. You may watch our recorded Alumni Leader Conversation on How to Create a Service Project if you are looking for ideas.

Survey Your Chapter Members

  • WVU Alumni Association staff can create and distribute the survey for you.
  • As a chapter, decide which non-profit organization(s) you want to support.
  • Examples of community service ideas include volunteering with local food pantries, environment clean-up groups, reading to children’s groups, and many more.
  • Research different community service options here.

Determine When To Volunteer

Based on survey results, you can determine if you should host service events annually, quarterly, etc. Select dates in advance and add them to your annual calendar.

Plan a Project on WVU Alumni Day of Service

The selected date for each year will be communicated well in advance so that chapters have time to prepare.

Participate in Annual WVU Alumni Association Service Initiatives

An example of this would be our annual Bears and Blankets Campaign, collecting physical and monetary donations for the WVU Medicine Golisano Children’s Hospital. Reference the Bears and Blankets Best Practices for more information on how to participate.

Develop Social Media and Email Communications

WVU Alumni Association staff can create graphics and send emails for each chapter to promote community service events. Events will also be added to the WVU calendar. Please use the Event Form to submit all events.
