From Down The Hall: June 2025

|

With Spring Commencement now behind us and a new class of Mountaineers stepping into their next chapter, summer has officially arrived. At the WVU Alumni Association, we’re gearing up for an exciting season filled with chapter events, engagement opportunities, and initiatives that strengthen the bond between alumni and our alma mater. One initiative especially close to our hearts is Bears and Blankets, which supports the brave children receiving care at WVU Medicine Children’s.

Bears and Blankets over Cooper's Rock

More than 9,000 young patients are admitted to WVU Medicine Children’s Hospital every year. Many of them are facing serious health challenges while also navigating the emotional stress of being away from home in an unfamiliar setting. Bears and Blankets is a simple yet powerful way to bring them comfort. By donating new, store-bought stuffed animals or blankets or contributing financially toward their purchase, you can make a child’s hospital stay a little brighter, and share the warmth of the Mountaineer spirit.

What began six years ago as a local effort by our Lone Star Chapter has since grown into a nationwide movement. In 2024, we expanded the program across the country, and thanks to the generosity of our community, more than 500 items were collected and delivered to the hospital. This year, we’re setting our sights even higher with a goal of collecting 1,000 items to support the hospital’s Child Life Program, which helps young patients cope with hospitalization through play, education, and emotional support.

There are many ways to get involved. One of the best is by attending a signature event hosted by one of our WVU Alumni Association chapters around the country, many of which are participating in this initiative. These events not only provide a fun, casual way to reconnect with fellow alumni, but many also feature Bears and Blankets collection drives or fundraisers, giving you a chance to contribute directly to the cause.

If you're already looking ahead to fall, don’t worry! Bears and Blankets doesn’t stop when summer ends. Football season is another great time to get involved. Many participating chapters host game watch events where alumni gather together to cheer on the Mountaineers. These gatherings are a perfect opportunity to participate by bringing a bear or blanket along with your Mountaineer pride. It’s a simple way to give back while enjoying one of the most beloved traditions in our alumni family.

You can also support by dropping off your donations at the Erickson Alumni Center, coordinating with your local participating chapter leader, or by making a financial gift online, where you can choose to donate to the overall cause or on behalf of your local alumni chapter.

Want to go even further? Help us spread the word by sharing your support on social media! Post a photo of your donation and tag @WVUAlumni on Facebook and Instagram, or @WVUAlumniAssoc on X (formerly Twitter). Your story may inspire others to give, too.

Every donation, big or small, helps us get one step closer to our goal, and more importantly, delivers comfort to a child in need.

If you’d like to donate items but aren’t sure where to start, visit our website for information about accepted items, suggested retailers, and participating alumni chapters. Together, we can make a meaningful impact in the lives of these young people and their families.

Let’s continue to rally around this important cause and show what it means to be a Mountaineer.
