From Down the Hall: January 2026

|

As we enter a new year, I always feel the need to reflect on the amazing things our alumni continue to accomplish. Across the country and around the world, Mountaineers are making an impact in their careers, in their communities, and in the lives of those around them.

January is a time of fresh starts and renewed energy. It’s a moment to look ahead with optimism while staying grounded in the traditions and values that connect us all to West Virginia University. Whether in big moments or quiet acts of support, our alumni carry the Old Gold and Blue with them, reflecting the values that unite Mountaineers everywhere.

One of my favorite parts of each new year is the announcement of the newest class of the Academy of Distinguished Alumni. This year’s class includes four outstanding graduates whose careers embody Mountaineer excellence. The 2026 inductees, Michael J. Florio, Nitin N. Kumbhani, Dr. Mary Ellen Mazey, and Morris Morrison, will be honored at a special ceremony on January 30 at the Erickson Alumni Center. Each has reached remarkable heights in fields ranging from media and business to education and global leadership, and their accomplishments serve as an inspiring example of what’s possible with a foundation built at WVU. 2026 Academy of Distinguished Alumni inductees

The Academy of Distinguished Alumni represents the highest honor presented by the WVU Alumni Association, recognizing individuals whose achievements bring distinction to the University. While their paths have taken them in many different directions, these inductees share a common thread: a commitment to leadership, making a lasting impact, and embracing what it means to be a Mountaineer. With past inductees including iconic figures such as Katherine Johnson, Jerry West, and Don Knotts, this honor places the 2026 honorees among the most esteemed Mountaineers in University history.

Gathering to recognize these accomplished Mountaineers also allows us to celebrate the legacy of those who came before them, and the bright future ahead for those who will follow in their footsteps. Moments like these remind us that our alumni network isn’t just vast, it’s deeply connected and powerfully impactful in communities near and far.

As we begin 2026, I’m grateful for the passion, loyalty, and generosity that define this network. The year ahead brings countless new opportunities to strengthen the bonds that make our alumni community so special, and I’m excited to experience it together.
