From Down the Hall: November 2024

|

It’s hard to believe it’s November already! As we enter the final months of the year and gather with family and friends to reflect on all we’re grateful for, I find myself inspired by the strength and spirit the Mountaineer alumni community has shown us this year. There have been countless memorable moments—gatherings rich with tradition, camaraderie, and the unmistakable pride of being a Mountaineer. From welcoming a new class of Mountaineer alumni to flying the Let’s Go flag proudly this summer, to game-day celebrations, Homecoming reunions, and milestone achievements, each event has reminded us of all we accomplish together. These connections and the memories we create side-by-side fill us with gratitude, and we look forward to many more moments to celebrate what it truly means to be part of this remarkable community. I am continually grateful for how this community has shaped me and my Mountaineer journey.

One of this year’s greatest joys has been welcoming a new class of alumni into their first year of membership with the Alumni Association, connecting them to a dynamic and growing network of Mountaineers around the world. Taking part in GradFest and Commencement to watch our graduates transition from students to alumni is a reminder of the legacy of West Virginia University and the countless paths that begin here. Each new class brings fresh energy and ambition, adding new voices and talents to our alumni community. This year’s graduates are not only a testament to their hard work but also to the support of Mountaineers who came before them, creating a network that stretches across generations and unites us all.

This year, we were also thrilled to welcome alumni back to campus as they celebrated new members of their own Mountaineer family who were just beginning their WVU journey at events like Decide WVU and Discover WVU. Sharing memories of their time in Morgantown, they brought campus life to new heights, offering students an authentic glimpse into the Mountaineer experience. It’s always heartening to see alumni walk familiar paths, reminisce about their college days, and inspire future Mountaineers to carry forward our proud traditions. Moments like these capture the joy and unity that define our community, reminding us of the lifelong connection we all share with this special place.

This summer, our journey took us not only across the state but across the country as we visited alumni and celebrated with our chapters during their annual signature events that brought Mountaineers together from coast to coast. From small towns to major cities, we proudly waved the Let’s Go flag, a symbol of our shared pride, and were met with Mountaineer spirit at every stop. Flying the flag alongside alumni in their local communities—whether at picnics, student send offs, golf tournaments, scholarship fundraisers, service projects or mixers—was a powerful reminder of the strength and reach of our network. These gatherings weren’t just events; they were year-round celebrations of a Homecoming, each one deepening the connections that unite Mountaineers everywhere.

As fall arrived, alumni chapters nationwide continued reuniting Mountaineers through lively game-watching events, where fans gathered to cheer for the Old Gold and Blue from afar. These gatherings not only unite alumni but also foster a sense of community, allowing fans to connect and celebrate their shared passion for WVU, regardless of where they live. Meanwhile, on campus, we launched the season with our annual Marmaduke Dent Benefit. This year's event was truly memorable, featuring live music inspired by the sounds of Jimmy Buffett, which brought a taste of the islands to the Erickson Alumni Center. The funds raised will support scholarships that ensure future generations of Mountaineers can thrive, while also enhancing alumni engagement through programs that build lasting connections. It was a night filled with celebration, camaraderie, and a strong commitment to supporting the next wave of WVU students and alumni.

We’ve also had the pleasure of bringing alumni and fans together for each home football game at Erickson Alumni Center during HAIL West Virginia, a unique game day experience that brought the excitement of Mountaineer football right to the heart of Morgantown. HAIL WV transformed game days with a festive atmosphere, delicious local food, and a place to connect with fellow alumni, friends and fans—all under one roof. More than just a tailgate, HAIL is a celebration that captures the essence of Mountaineer spirit, offering alumni a memorable way to kick off their game day together.

Last month, we experienced a Homecoming celebration to remember, filled with the energy and excitement that only WVU can bring. Alumni from near and far returned to Morgantown, reconnecting with old friends, revisiting favorite campus spots, and immersing themselves once again in the WVU spirit. The weekend was packed with events— like Alumni spirit stops, Mountaineer Friday, Welcome Home receptions, reunions, a food truck street festival, the Homecoming parade and of course, the football game—that reminded us of our shared pride and traditions. We also celebrated Mountaineers who embodied our values and traditions. This week, we are partaking in another WVU tradition that has shaped our campus for 77 years: Mountaineer Week. I am incredibly grateful for traditions like these that showcase the vibrance of our University, alumni community, our Appalachian history and our state.

We are once again closing out another year and entering a season of thanks and with that, I am thrilled to highlight a truly special moment in the journey of our Mountaineer Marching Band. This year, after countless hours of practice and dedication, they will take their talents to the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, representing West Virginia University and our great state on one of the most prestigious stages in the world. This milestone is a testament to the hard work, perseverance, and Mountaineer spirit that has shaped their journey. It’s an exciting moment for the Pride and for all of us, and we can’t wait to celebrate their success as they shine on national television.

As we reflect on our experiences together this year, this month’s post marks the first of a two-part reflection. I look forward to connecting with you again next month as we highlight more moments from 2024 that have shaped our community.

I feel a deep sense of gratitude for our incredible Mountaineer network. From welcoming new alumni to cherishing the memories made at various events and celebrations, each moment has underscored the strength and unity that define us.

Looking ahead, I am hopeful for the continued growth and success of West Virginia University, knowing we are collectively shaping a bright future. With our shared love for WVU and the bonds that unite us, I am excited for the many more moments we will create together as a community. Here’s to the journey ahead, as Mountaineers, forever proud.
